When We Forget We’re the Apple of His Eye

No, I didn’t forget about my blog post on Wednesday. I’ve been rather busy. Exhausted. Time-crunched. My mama had open heart surgery recently and things are a little up-ended at the moment.  More than once in my sleep-deprived state, I’ve forgotten that I’m the apple of God’s eye and I’ve taken comfort in David’s prayer of blessing (Psalm 17:8).

While I haven’t faced the same “mortal enemies” that the Psalmist refers to, I’ve indeed felt the weight of opposition. That’s what physical exhaustion does to us.

For those of you who have experienced life challenges (while still trying to write or work another day job) then, of course, you know that dog paddling-without-a-life jacket kind of feeling.

I’m not sure when life will return to “normal,” but I’m determined to smile, laugh, and keep my chin up (’cause that’s what my mama and daddy taught me!) Life may seem a bit off kilter at the moment, but I’ve had enough of those “moments” over the years to know that nothing lasts forever. This, too, shall pass.

And along this new journey, there have been so many blessings:

  • A five hour surgery took just under four.
  • Mama is recovering faster than most.
  • We’re making memories.
  • God is showing me new things spiritually.
  • My new office furniture arrived and my wonderful husband surprised me. (I came home to find everything already assembled!)
  • I’ll soon be registering for this year’s ACFW conference. Squeeeing over my future roommates–Jessica Patch, Lindsay Harrel, and Gabrielle Meyer!

So, I have a lot to be thankful for.

And I really can’t say enough about the precious mother God blessed me with. She’s a gentle soul with a steely resolve. Although it’s a slow process, she’s healing and getting better. I love her quick wit and her sweet, Jesus-seeking spirit.

One of my favorite moments came the other morning. It was one of those ephemeral moments when God, in His subtle, but profound way, reminded me

“Yes, you really are the apple of my eye…”

It was early and there was a slight chill to the air. I stole a glance in the bedroom where Mama sat on the edge of her bed in the pre-dawn light. Completely still, head bowed, and eyes closed, she was a statue. I wondered if she’d dozed back off to sleep after a trip to the bathroom.

Or…was she hurting? Did she need something for pain?

“Mama, are you o.k.?”

Quiet seconds ticked by. “Yes. I’m just fine. I was praying for everyone…”

By “everyone,” I knew she meant family and my breath caught. Even in her weakened state, Mama sought to bring her loved ones before the Throne.

Isn’t it awesome how when we forget we’re the apple of God’s eye, He always remembers?

And He raises up the right people at the right time to beseech Him on our behalf.

Wow!

Doesn’t get much better, folks.

Be someone’s prayer warrior today. Stand in the gap for the one who’s too spent to do it himself.

I’ve gotten some specific words from God this week by just opening my Bible. I’m “asking for the rain in the springtime” and “waiting on the Lord”.

Glad your mom is healing. I’m keeping her close in my prayers.

I look forward to meeting you this year in Indy! It’s going to be a great conference!
