Sometimes Life Happens…

You may have noticed I’ve not been as active on social media lately.

Here’s the deal: sometimes life happens.

Last week my mother had open heart surgery. The surgeon replaced the aortic valve to be precise. It’s an intense surgery and one that requires a lengthy recovery period.

Never a smoker and in optimum health, my mama’s prognosis is excellent. Still, as you might guess, there are a number of risks associated with such an invasive surgery, and once the patient returns home, constant TLC is necessary.

Since I’m pretty familiar with hospitals and many medical procedures, some things didn’t take me by surprise. Still, I’ve learned new words (and meanings) associated with open heart surgery. The biggest shock after such a surgery is the incision site itself. Not to be graphic, but it’s nothing short of scary. And of course, that’s in addition to seeing my mother on a ventilator while attached to all the bells and whistles of monitors, wound drains, and various other medical devices.

Despite the mental and physical exhaustion that our family has endured over the past week, God is good and He has provided supernatural strength.

My mother, a true Proverbs 31 kind of woman, has been an inspiration to all of us. Her first words to us after waking from anesthesia (and once the vent was removed) were “Have you eaten?”

I mean, really?! Who says that right after open heart surgery?!

Always concerned about her family’s welfare above her own, our matriarch remains the tower of strength. We’re amazed at her progress and perseverance. She’s determined to be “up and going” as soon as she’s able.

I plan to post Friday if I can, but if something comes up I thought you might enjoy some of these words of encouragement.

Praying for a speedy recovery for your mom. It sounds like she has a great attitude, which will surely help. How sweet that she was concerned about others. I wonder if she’d have tried to get up and fix something if you hadn’t. 🙂 Hugs to both of you!

Patti, Mama’s attitude is amazing. And throughout all of this, she’s always ready with a smile. (Yep, she would have indeed tried to throw on some chicken fried steak and potatoes and gravy if she were able!) Thanks for the hugs!
