As we mature (sounds better than “age”), we come to realize certain truths about ourselves. We also see the world around us in a different light.
We remove our rose-colored glasses and view life through a new lens, often re-evaluating goals, duty, balance, and things that we believe matter.
While our core values may be the same, how we approach situations now might differ from our response way back when.
What causes this transformation? Why does the light bulb suddenly go on?
Age ushers in a new sense of freedom. We no longer feel the same constraints of expectation that we once did. We’ve learned that our world isn’t going to fall apart just because we fumble or flop at something.
The reality is in the light of eternity, is it really going to matter?
Nine times out of ten—no.
Psychology 101 asks—what’s the worst thing that can happen?
Once we examine the scenario, it’s usually not as bad as we pictured.
Take the creative arts. Writing, for example.
Many of us have plodded along the path to publication for years.
We’ve learned. We’ve grown. We’ve worked hard at improving our craft. We’ve advanced in contests, earned praise, and garnered attention of agents and editors. And still—our career seems stalled.
We may start to berate ourselves. Devalue our effort. Undermine our gift.
We may even lose courage.
Something I’ve experienced?
When we cling to a desire so tightly that we lose perspective, that’s exactly when we should release it and ourselves.
I don’t mean give up.
I mean throw the weight of expectation overboard and allow God to chart a new course.
That’s scary because submission is hard. Yielding to another’s will other than our own isn’t inherent in our DNA. We want to help God out a bit.
Our path might not include writing—just now. It may be waiting.
But first we have to release ourselves.
