Happy (early) 4th of July, friend! I hope your holiday is safe, fun, and family-filled.
We’ve hit a rainy spell in the Ozarks the last few days, but we’re hopeful that it moves on before we celebrate with fireworks this evening.
Because of family members’ work schedules, we’ll enjoy our activities tonight instead of on the 4th. We’ll grill a few brats, eat a little dessert, and park ourselves on the lawn and watch the annual light show our men have prepared.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t tell you about last year’s grand finale. Whoa. Let’s hope we don’t have a replay of that.
To make a long story short—something malfunctioned during the big moment last year.
Pop. Pop. Pop.
Boom!
Wheeee…
Snap. Snap. Snap.
Swooosh. Swooosh. Swooosh.
And repeat.
Again. And again. And yes—even again.
Over and over, the things whizzed past, exploding in all directions—by our feet. Our ears. Our teenagers.
“What’s going on? They’re not supposed to do that!” I covered my ears and jumped up from the lawn chair as crackles and pops exploded all around me.
Hubby and brother-in-law hollered something. I think it was “Run for cover!”
And then my mama bounced up from her chair, too. “Ow! I do believe something just got me!”
Somehow, one of those half-crazed, no-fail boogers blazed a path from the launching pad, over the lawn, past the driveway, over the river and through the woods, and up underneath Mama’s lawn chair—where it promptly exploded!
(We later learned those particular fireworks had issues. A lot of folks reported them malfunctioning or improperly exploding at the wrong time.)
Thankfully, we were all okay, but my mama’s posterior and upper thigh did sustain some minor burns. And oh, dearie me. The experience gave us a fright for a lifetime.
Sooo.
I didn’t really think we’d shoot off fireworks this year, but our younger crowd persuaded us to try again.
Prayerfully, it’ll be a fun (but uneventful) celebration.
Here’s to this great nation’s independence! *clink* (My coffee mug to yours.)
May your holiday be blessed as we celebrate life, liberty, and the freedoms this great country offers.

Hopefully, we will have a quiet and safe 4th this year, although last year certainly ended in many comments—ha! We just have to celebrate this GREAT COUNTRY God has allowed us to live in and be a part of HIS family. Wonderful newsletter this month…stay safe everyone, and as someone who is familiar with the Fire Dept…be aware of your surroundings! 🙂
