Well, like other people, I’m at odds. This week has tied my emotions in knots.

Each day has brought something new.

Updates, facts, statistics—important topics to be sure, but rather depressing if we dwell on them too long.

Yes, it’s important we stay informed about COVID-19, but I refuse to glue myself to the news 24/7. That’s not healthy or beneficial to productivity.

As I said in my recent newsletter, there are a number of creative outlets and pursuits that we may find enjoyable at this time. The coronavirus may have us sequestered in our homes, but it doesn’t have to invade every aspect of our lives.

Granted, it may seem like it because this virus has temporarily altered our way of life, but we can still choose proactive activities that prompt joy and promote well-being.

Since I’m a writer, obviously, I write. As I await copy edits on book two in my Welcome to Ruby series, I’m writing book three to deadline.

I also read. Admittedly, not as much as I used to, but a lot.

Which ties nicely into the subject of today’s blog.

Reading is a balm to many. Books and stories soothe us. They spirit us away to new lands and encourage us when world events upend us.

For those who enjoy reading, having more time on our hands means indulging in one of our favorite outlets. Though I prefer print, my ever-faithful Kindle gets a work-out, too.

Not sure if e-books are for you? Let me add my two-cents.

While everything in the world seems off-kilter just now, e-books serve a unique purpose.

They connect us to our favorite authors and stories, while offering a brief respite from day-to-day realities.

When we immerse ourselves in e-books, our point of gravity shifts. Though that could be said for all books, regardless the format, e-books do carry many advantages. (Click-to-Tweet)

Let’s look at them.

  1. E-books are easy to download. All we need is a decent wifi connection.
  2. E-books are convenient. We can easily tuck them in our purse, luggage, or bedside table.
  3. E-books are great ways to support authors. With the economic downturn, buying an author’s books, reading their stories, and posting book reviews means the world to authors.
  4. E-books are germ-free. Yes, that’s right. We can’t catch coronavirus from e-books!
  5. E-books offer great deals and bargains. Many times, they are deeply discounted in comparison to their print counterpart.
  6. E-books are adjustable. Again, I know you know this. We can increase the font size, adjust the lighting, and bookmark and highlight our favorite passages. We can listen to the audible version of our favorite stories. Convenient and fun!
  7. E-books offer a vast selection of titles. Also, on one device, we can store massive numbers of books.
  8. E-books save bookshelf space. Print will always be my preference, but my bookshelves are getting heavy.
  9. E-books (and e-readers) make fabulous gifts. Because…who doesn’t love books?
  10. E-books are techie without being (too) techie. We needn’t be an electronics whiz to read an e-book. All age groups enjoy them!

Is the sure thing worth risking for the possibility of maybe?

Charla Winthrop, a savvy business woman seeking a permanent lifestyle change in small-town Ruby, learns that things aren’t always what they appear when she takes up residence in a house steeped in charm and a hint of mystery.

Rumor has it that Sam Packard the town carpenter is her go-to guy for home remodeling, but can Charla convince him to help her—with no strings attached, of course? Alone far too long, Sam’s prayed that God would send him a wife and a mother for his daughters. However, the new Ruby resident is hardly what he imagined. A new place to call “home,” the possibility of what might be, and the answer to someone’s prayers unite this unlikely pair with the help of the town’s residents.

Nestled in the Ozarks’ hills and hollows is Ruby, Missouri, a quaint, cozy town where “neighbor” is merely another word for “friend.” Ruby will charm and delight as will her quirky, lovable characters who will steal your heart, but hand it right back—with whipped cream and a cherry on top. Savor your new friends’ sorrows and successes in the community where offbeat is perfect and mishaps and mayhem never tasted so good.
