Ask writers why they write and I bet you’ll get a hundred different answers. Ask them again what motivates them to write, and I think the answers may boil down to this one thing: imagination.
Writers are wired differently. We’re artists. We see things in multidimensional worlds and colors. Our minds race with new and varied possibilities. We sometimes frame our stories within our minds, letting the ideas, characters, and stories gel before actually putting our thoughts “out there.”
The exciting part of the creative process isn’t what we see in black and white. It’s the myriad hues of everything between. It’s even those colors we can’t yet see, but we know are there.
We sense them.
Feel them.
Want to share them.
Our thoughts, words, and stories sit on the fringe of our subconscious until we tap into the source of where they come from: our imagination.
As a little girl, I just knew I would burst if I didn’t write my thoughts down on paper. As you might guess, my mind worked overtime. I felt like the persistent leaky faucet that refused to turn off.
I was convinced that everyone had a story and it was up to me to tell it.
Many nurtured my desire along the way. Some failed me.
It happens.
Writers are an odd lot and we realize the world doesn’t always understand the way our minds work. Folks don’t know that words on fire need rescued.
Not by buckets filled with ice water, but by imaginations armed with pen, paper, and keyboard.
Today, if you’re standing in the background longing for encouragement or words of affirmation, please know this:
-
No one has exactly what you have. God created you with an exceptional viewpoint and unique abilities.
-
You may not see the big picture yet; it’s okay. God does.
-
In the past, maybe no one’s told you this, but now you need to know. You have a divine purpose and a ministry to live out. Don’t waste another minute believing otherwise.
- Your imagination isn’t something to be tamped down, snuffed out, or quietly discarded. Perhaps, you’re still learning how to harness the gift you’ve been given. Sometimes, God says “grow” before “go.”
- The lie has been defeated. You’re worthy. You matter. Your thoughts and God’s direction of them are the most powerful tools in your arsenal.
It’s time to get busy and tell a few stories!

I love having an imagination. Your post today reminds me of the part in Anne of Green Gables when Anne asks Marilla if she ever imagines the way things could be, and Marilla says she prefers to think of things as they way they are…and Anne says, “Oh Marilla, how much you miss.” That’s how I feel about having an imagination…I get to experience so much that I wouldn’t otherwise. 🙂

Melissa, a gal after my own heart! I love Anne of Green Gables, too! I really need to get the boxed set of DVDs and have a movie marathon. Anne certainly did know the power of imagination. And Marilla was eventually won over a time or two. 😉
I like the way you describe writing in the second paragraph, seeing the writer as an artist. A walk outdoors or a writers group meeting inspire me.

Patti, yes, I’ve always thought of writers as “artists.” We paint with our words instead of brushes, but I think our creative processes are similar. I like where you find inspiration. 🙂
