The Creative Process and Fairy Dust

Cynthia Herron Writing 6 Comments

I love art.

I appreciate the creative process and the end result.

For me, it’s the in-between period that becomes rather labor intensive.

I think most writers would tell you there’s an initial high that comes when we’re creating a new story with fresh characters.

We love to plot and pour it out on paper. Sometimes we can’t type fast enough.

When the ideas are firing in quick succession, the sky’s the limit. The world’s our oyster. In fact, we’re on top of the world with our own creative brilliance.

And then reality hits.

The thunderbolt moment strikes.

We realize though our “masterpiece” is completed, there’s still much work left to do.

Editing, revising, and polishing replace our pie-in-the-sky mentality. The dream of getting it right the first time vanishes.

We’re older.

Wiser.

Jaded?

No. I don’t think “jaded” is the correct word. I think the term I’m searching for is a little less dramatic.

How about self-aware?

As in “realist.”

After what seems like a party in la-la-land where pixies and princesses hang out, suddenly we’re thrust into the bright white truth of reality.

We no longer envision fairies and rainbows, but we’re still open to a little of that fairy dust just the same.

The truth is, however, a great book isn’t great without a reason.

And generally, that reason involves a little more than a pretty pixie and fairy dust.

Can you guess what I’ll be doing this weekend? 😉

I just came out of the revision cave – again. When I did revisions this time…everything suddenly clicked. I could see where the manuscript needed to be tightened – and how to do it. After years of writing, it ran like water. I feel good.

In the past revision hasn’t really been a cave for me. Because I have been writing shorter pieces (devotions and articles) it’s been more like an outcropping where you catch your breath for a minute and move on.

I’m working on my first book-length project now, so I haven’t yet reached the revision cave stage. I guess I’ll see when I get there…

Tonya, revision is an ongoing process, I’ve found. There are always things we can do to make our work better; that’s why critique partners are so helpful, I think. Keep plowing ahead–you’ll make it!

Reminder: Don’t forget to contact me with your mailing info. You won my June blog drawing. 🙂
