Do you ever get so caught up in the “must dos” of life, you sometimes forget to savor the moment?
For me, especially lately, I’ve found that this is true. My life seems to be such a whirlwind right now that it can be a little tough to savor the stacks of laundry, the trail of dust, or a host of other household chores that silently summon.
I’m really not even talking about those things though. I’m thinking more about the writing process–this particular point in time that I’ve worked so hard to attain. After years of wondering how it would feel to finally see my writing dream come to fruition, it’s almost surreal to think it’s one step closer to happening. It’s like standing at the edge of a creek bank, and not only being able to see bottom, but to at last, get to dip a big toe in!
All I have to say is that when God deems the timing is right, get ready, because your life can change in a heartbeat. Things that once seemed to take forever to “get here” are now suddenly sitting on your doorstep. Slow motion shifts into high gear. Bedroom slippers are traded in for running shoes. Busy, albeit a “good” busy, becomes your new normal.
One piece of advice that I might humbly give is that you indeed take the time to revel in your accomplishment whether it be a writing goal, a personal goal, or a life challenge met. Savor each stage along the way rewarding yourself with maybe a small thing to earmark your journey.
When I first received an offer of literary representation (see my post on God’s Timing), I was truly over the moon! An ancient phrase I know, but one that so aptly describes how I felt.
I remember sitting there, almost too stunned to even speak, with tears of joy rolling down my cheeks. I immediately wanted to shout out my news to anyone and everyone who cared to listen, but I was afraid if I did, I’d be sure to wake up to find it was only a dream!
I chose to celebrate in a quiet way with those I love, and then, it was back to business as usual. Bottom line: whenever success steps up to introduce herself, be bold! Grab hold with both hands. Welcome her. Invite her in for the whole tea party, not just a quick sip from the cup. Savor the moment because that moment quickly slides into the next one. And the next one. And the next…Well, you get the picture.

A question for you to think about: How do YOU savor your special moments?

When I receive big news, my hubby takes me out to a celebratory dinner. Olive Garden is our destination. Yum!

That sounds like a winner to me, Keli! Two (or ten) of those breadsticks and I’m good to go!
Haha, I hope nobody is counting those breadsticks! Yum.
This post was for me today. I’ve been scared to celebrate a milestone for fear I’ll wake up and it will be a dream. Everything you’ve said today has spoken to my heart and confirmed what I know to be true. Celebrate each step of the way. Thank you so much! 🙂

Oh, Jessica, I’m sending you a big cyberspace hug! You know, I think when we live in fear/trepidation of something, (especially concerning celebrating our accomplishments) it’s Satan’s wily way of causing us unnecessary self-doubt. Shake it off, gal, and go write that next chapter!
And thanks so much for your kind words!
Such a timely read for me. Thanks! I just wrote a post on patience. I’ll repeat to myself,
“Savor the process. Savor the process… .” Celebrating small accomplishments is great advice. Also, I love the pictures you use in your postings. 🙂

Yes, Tanya, always treat yourself to some little “reward” when accomplishing a goal! And do savor the process. It might seem like an uphill climb, but it will be sooo worth it. I try to savor it all–the highs, and yes, even the lows, too, because they’re all learning tools.
And I’m glad you like the pictures. I don’t leave the house without my trusty, old camera!
Love this post, Cynthia! I respond much like you do. I celebrate, but then the accomplishment motivates me to work harder. Congratulations on finding representation! That’s a HUGE step toward your goals.

Yes, I find I work best with some positive reinforcement, too! Thank you for your congrats, Sarah!
I tend to share accomplishments with my hubby and daughter, as I know they’re happy for me and supply positive feedback…or tell me to wake up, it’s morning. 🙂

I think as writers (and it’s probably true in a lot of professions/daily scenarios) we’re afraid to share for fear of having some egg on our faces should a glitch happen. Years ago, I hesitated to tell people that I was a writer…but you know, Patti, it’s kinda like stepping out on faith. Once we put it out there, we give it to God do the rest!
Thanks, Cynthia, for your wise words. Life is meant to be shared, the disappointing times as well as the joyful ones. I’ll try to do better. 🙂
This is such a cool and inspiring post. And I definitely agree with your post on God’s timing and revelling each step of success, and to savour each moment. Great advice.
