How is it that we can want something so badly that we lose sight of what God wants for us? We presume to know when the right time will be, how it will happen, and what course of action we must pursue to obtain our desire.
If I’d known it would take 15 to 20 years to launch a writing career, would I have still plugged away, spending literally thousands of hours churning out words on notepads, typewriters, and computers? The answer is: I honestly don’t know. (It’s probably best I didn’t know when that door would open because not knowing fueled my hope.)
Now, I can see God’s timing in my life much more clearly. The multiple time constraints of working day jobs, caring for a family, and numerous other commitments over the years allowed me to continue to hone my craft. I matured and so did my writing. Quitting wasn’t an option. Despite life’s obstacles, I remained driven, focused, and on a quest to accomplish my goal of becoming a published author.
You may remember a few posts ago, I hinted at some news I hoped to share. While I can’t give too many specifics yet, I can tell you that I have received some news!
There are two calls any writer will tell you that cause their hearts to pound. One is an offer of literary representation. The other, after that, is that your book has sold. I can now report: I RECEIVED THAT FIRST CALL LAST NIGHT!
Several months ago, I queried a particular literary agent regarding my novel. She then asked for sample chapters, which led to a request for the complete, which led to an inquiry regarding a marketing plan, which led to the timing of a certain phone call. None of this happened overnight, as those of you who write well know. (I’ll talk more about the process and my path to publication in future posts.)
To summarize, I have been offered representation by said agent, who is amazing! (I’m still pinching myself to see if I’m dreaming.)
As you might expect, I have to be rather vague at the moment, pending signed contracts, but I am one step closer in realizing my publishing dream, and I have an idea that my busy life is about to get a little busier. In a good way.
A question for you to ponder…When considering God’s timing, what’s something in your own life that you’re still waiting on?
