I think as writers, it’s only natural that we project a certain amount of ourselves into the stories we create.
Some may refer to “it” as voice, style, or even vision.
We breathe life into our characters by way of our own experiences and revelations.
Since we’re all unique, it’s important that we stay true to ourselves, and write what we know, what we feel, and what we’re good at. (That’s a subject for another day, I suppose.)
As I write, I think about my own likes and dislikes. Maybe some of my characters might prefer mashed potatoes over baked. Quiet walks over amusement parks. Sunny days instead of dreary ones.
Many of my characters have colorful, vibrant personalities, while others may be more middle-of-the-road. (I’m a combination of the two, although that may seem a little contradictory. I know. I don’t understand how that works either. It’s a woman-thing. Or a God-thing.)
By nature, I’m also a down-to-earth person. I appreciate simple things and I take joy in the ordinary.
Some of the simple, ordinary things I love are:
- Freshly brewed coffee
- Sunny days
- Bookstores
- Children’s smiles
- Sunrise at the beach
- The word “Mama”
- The Ozarks
- Old movies
- Peonies
- Family time
- Snickerdoodles
- Hugs
- Freshly laundered bath towels
- Fall color
- Baby animals
- Silver Dollar City
- Scented candles
- Worship music
- Crayons
- Romance (Of course!)

These are just a few of my favorite things.
What are yours?

What a great list, Cindy. I love bookstores and romance, too. And I love seeing friends. Can’t wait to see YOU. Soon!

Keli, I’m excited to see you, too!
Browsing antique stores and finding a deal. Lilacs. Days with nothing scheduled so I can do what I want. Playing Scrabble, especially with my mom. Driving on a gorgeous fall day with my music loud and singing even louder. Singing one of my gransweeties to sleep. Worshiping with friends. Preaching. Teaching. Seeing something I wrote published. Riding my bike.

5. Sunrises
6. Sunsets

Beth, your list sounds great! I especially love your #9. (Holding my husband’s hand makes everything right.)
Listening to the birds sing and watching butterflies go about their busy day.
