Ever hanker for something different?

Well, Billy Gail’s Cafe near Branson, Missouri is sure to fit that bill.

Last weekend, we kick-started spring break by meandering down south a ways to this delightfully deelish cafe, owned by the lovely Gail Blong—widow to Billy who passed away in 2012.

I came across this profile of the place in our wonderful Rural Missouri publication, and our family agreed this was a must-see/eat one day when we had time. (Our educator son had eaten there with some friends and gave Billy Gail’s a hearty thumbs-up.) We couldn’t wait to try it!

Billy Gail’s is located at 5291 State Highway 265 near Silver Dollar City, west of Branson. It’s doors open at 7 a.m., but we made it there well after that and parking in the smallish lot was already maxed out. Blessedly, we spotted a nearby parking lot at a closed motel—one of the few that didn’t have a “No Trespassing” sign posted.

Note: Get to Billy Gail’s at the crack of dawn or wear some comfortable walking shoes. Yep—this place is hopping at daybreak. It’s that good! And… there will be a line. (Chin up. It’s a fun place to wait—full of ambiance and loaded with character—annnd free coffee. Patrons just help themselves to the mismatched ceramic coffee mugs and bottomless coffee pot right near the front entrance.)

Gail, who has to be one of the dearest, sweetest souls on earth, promptly greeted us as we walked through the bright red door.

“Hi there, folks. It’ll be just a little while. Can I get your name?”

Like most people, I adored her immediately. Her warm smile and Ozarkian charm made me tingle down to my toes.

For the next 30 minutes or so, hubby, daughter, son, and I waited our turn and soaked up the atmosphere and snippets of ongoing conversation.

Billy Gail’s Cafe oozes nostalgia and vintage,
sparking feel-good memories of days gone by…

Some things will tickle your funny bone and cause you to giggle—like this sign. (‘Cause you just may relate.)

Something you might have heard once or twice in your lifetime.

While we waited for our turn to be seated, we perused the menu and changed our minds at least a dozen times…because all the selections sounded so scrumptious!

Billy Gail’s Cafe resembles a log cabin inside,
and boasts lots of knick-knacks and geegaws sure to delight.

Get a load of this menu! Be forewarned—go with an appetite—or plan to share. Mouth-watering selections like the Belly Buster tempted my tastebuds, but I knew better than to tackle that one alone. (It comes with three eggs, two huuuge buttermilk pancakes, hash browns, and your choice of bacon, ham, or sausage, and toast or biscuit. Wow!)

Enough delectable choices to satisfy each and every palate—even persnickety ones!

Hubby and I ordered the chicken fried steak breakfast complete with all the fixings. (Yes. We really did order two separate breakfasts—and learned a humble lesson in gluttony.) 🙂

Oh. My. Word.

Hubby finished most of his, but I had to share part of mine with our son, who’s tall and lanky and still in that young man growing phase, and had some room to spare.

Our teenage daughter decided to go for something a little less…uh…filling. Again—lesson learned. Her bacon and cheese omelet was half the size of the plate! But again. Yum. (Yep, I tried a bite. But just a wee one.)

The chicken fried steak was the real deal and it was delivered
on its own cute, little plate. Total heaven!

And then there was this…

Yep. THAT goes with the chicken fried steak breakfast. Mmmm...

Our son gobbled his meal in one full swoop so I wasn’t as quick at getting a photo. But here’s a shot of our teenager’s omelet.

Bacon and Cheese Omelet…chockful of mouth-watering goodness.

Our waitress (goodness gracious—I thought I jotted her name down) was friendly and full of energy. In just a few short moments we learned she was originally from Texas, but relocated to the Ozarks several years ago when she fell in love with the area and decided to stay.

As we ate, Gail navigated about the cozy dining area visiting with patrons, making sure the food was to their liking. (Let me just say—what we had certainly didn’t disappoint!)

On a scale of 1 to 10? 10+

And next time I’ll try those to-die-for pancakes. (The mondo-sized ones that hang off the side of the plate, just begging to be eaten.) Or… maybe the Border Breakfast Burrito (a little spice sure to satisfy). Or maybe even the Sloppy Biscuit (those big boogers are loaded with cheese, sausage, eggs, and creamy pepper gravy and looked like heaven on a cloud!)

Whew-whee!

Hungry yet? 😉
