Perspective During World Tragedy

Cynthia Herron Writing Leave a Comment

In light of what was happening in the world today, I found it difficult to concentrate on my WIP.

I stared at the blank computer screen, but the words wouldn’t come. I was writing fiction. Others—living, breathing human beings—were having their lives unfold in real-time on television and cell phones for millions of people everywhere to see.

I felt guilty as I sat in my comfortable home and watched the devastation in Japan. Writing made me feel worse.

The plight of those who are hurting has always humbled me. Maybe it’s because I walked my own road of sorrow a few years ago. You may be familiar with that road.

With Japan’s recent tragedy I didn’t know what to do other than wring my hands, pray, and go about my daily tasks. Routine was a comfort. I tried to write, but the words wouldn’t come.

As writers, when we witness such raw emotion and view such tremendous loss, I believe we tap into the same reserve that we use to create the stories and characters we’re so passionate about. While we may not be able to change events in the real world, we can still share God’s message in the fictional ones we create. His message of love, hope, and life everlasting.

I was deterred today.  I’ll be resolved tomorrow.
